History

The school was founded by a few enterprising parents in 1990 in the Helderberg Basin. The school started in the Strand as a satellite school of the Cheré Botha Centre in Bellville. It was founded by Mrs Gloria Botha whose daughter, Cheré, was born with Down syndrome. Even though Cheré died at an early age, the centre developed as the mother school of a few other schools in the Boland and other areas.

In 2004 Gloria Botha School was registered with the Western Cape Department of Education as an independent school (Registration number 0111007560) and is therefore allocated a limited subsidy. With the support of Richard Stuttaford Trust, Pinelands and Garden Cities, we opened our doors at our new premises in Somerset West in 2009.
The school has been endorsed by the Department of Social Services as a Non-profit organisation (033-432-NPO) and accredited by SARS as a Public Benefit Organisation with Section 18A status (Registration no 18/11/13/4279), which confers on South African donors the right to claim tax benefits.

Our mission is to build a safe and nurturing environment focused on maximizing each child’s sense of wellbeing and acquisition of skills for life.

Our vision is to develop confident and responsible individuals who aspire to achieve their full potential. We believe that a happy child is a successful one. All persons with intellectual disabilities are unique. They experience the same emotions as others. As with all children, given the correct teaching, love and support, children with intellectual disabilities can develop into self-sufficient individuals with various degrees of supervision. The staff at Gloria Botha School wants to develop each child’s potential to the best of our ability.
